On the 16th anniversary of the Smolensk air disaster, Lewica parliamentarians Magdalena Biejat, Dorota Olko and Maciej Kopiec commemorated the victims and highlighted profiles of left-wing politicians who died that day: Jerzy Szmajdziński, Jolanta Szymanek-Deresz and Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka. Szmajdziński held seats in the Sejm, led the SLD parliamentary club, chaired the National Defense Committee, and served as minister of national defence in two governments, among other positions. Szymanek-Deresz was a lawyer who served as undersecretary of state in the Chancellery of the President and later led the Chancellery; she was elected to the Sejm in 2000 and later served as deputy head of the SLD and ran the presidential campaign of Jerzy Szmajdziński. Jaruga-Nowacka, active in the Polish Women's League since the 1980s, served in the Sejm, held positions in the government for equality of women and men, was deputy prime minister, and campaigned for women's rights, a secular state and LGBTQ rights.
