MEP Gaetano Pedulla' (The Left) has asked the European Commission to assess whether regional legislation in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol complies with EU Directive 2003/4/EC on access to environmental information, following concerns over PFAS contamination in the municipality of Storo. The question, submitted on 2 July 2026, targets Regional Law No 10/2014, which critics say weakens municipalities' obligation to proactively publish environmental data.

The MEP's query references earlier parliamentary questions to the Italian Chamber of Deputies (10 June 2025) and the Regional Council (8 June 2026), as well as warnings from the Trentino-based association Più Democrazia and the provincial ombudsperson. Despite years of consultations with Italy's National Anticorruption Authority (ANAC), no roadmap has been produced to align the regional framework with EU and national law.

Pedulla' specifically asks the Commission to request clarifications from regional and Italian authorities and to verify compatibility with EU transparency principles. The Commission typically has six weeks to respond; its answer will signal whether it views the regional law as a potential breach of EU environmental access rules.

The case highlights a tension between regional autonomy and EU environmental transparency standards, with potential implications for citizens' right to information on pollution and public health risks.
