Polish MEP Maciej Wąsik (ECR) has asked the European Commission to confirm its position on Huawei as a high-risk supplier for 5G networks, seeking clarity on the official stance and the status of ongoing investigations. The question, submitted on 13 April 2026, targets the security of EU data processing and follows a LIBE Committee meeting where the Commission reiterated its view that Huawei poses a significantly higher risk than other vendors.

Wąsik’s written question references a Commission document from 15 June 2023 stating that Huawei and ZTE pose a significantly higher risk than other 5G suppliers, and notes that the Commission first identified Huawei as high-risk in 2020. The MEP asks three specific questions: whether the Commission still maintains that position, whether the statement by Deputy Director-General Despina Spanou on 23 February 2026 represented the official Commission view, and whether member state investigations confirm the high risk.

a yes/no confirmation on the Commission’s stance, a request to validate the official nature of the LIBE statement, and a query on the outcome of national probes. It signals a push for transparency and consistency in EU security policy toward Chinese telecom vendors.

Under Rule 144, the Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. The answer will indicate whether the EU executive continues to treat Huawei as a threat, potentially affecting 5G deployment decisions and vendor restrictions across member states.
