On 6 July 2026, the European Union announced it would vote against a draft resolution on international cooperation in the field of human rights at the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The resolution, tabled by Uganda on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), was described by the EU as a technical roll-over of previous texts, with several longstanding concerns unaddressed. The EU explanation of vote, delivered on behalf of EU member states in the Council, cited elements lacking endorsement by the UN membership, such as the concept of a "new international economic order," unbalanced language on terrorism that fails to reference human rights and international humanitarian law, and biased phrasing on unilateral coercive measures. The EU also regretted that its proposal to present the resolution on a biannual basis to improve Council efficiency was not considered by the core group. Consequently, EU member states will vote against the resolution and called on others to do the same, while remaining open to dialogue with NAM for future sessions.
