A six-member European Parliament delegation led by MEP Giuseppina Princi, Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Central Asia and Mongolia, visited Mongolia from 26 to 30 May 2026, holding high-level meetings on trade, energy, and political cooperation. The visit, which included the 18th EU–Mongolia Inter-Parliamentary Meeting, underscored Mongolia's strategic importance as a democratic partner between Russia and China.
The delegation, composed of MEPs from five political groups, was accompanied by the EU Delegation to Mongolia led by Ambassador Ina Marciulionyte. The centrepiece was the 18th IPM co-chaired by MP G.Temuulen and MEP Princi, where both sides reaffirmed shared democratic values. MP G.Temuulen highlighted the EBRD's commitment of up to one billion euros for Mongolia's green transition and stressed the need to diversify the economy away from mining. MEP Thierry Mariani praised Mongolia's balanced foreign policy and called for increased technology transfer from Europe. MP J.Bayarmaa proposed cooperation on cybersecurity and combating disinformation, while MP E.Bolormaa noted that EU–Mongolia trade totals one billion USD, with imports accounting for 91% and exports only 9%, urging progress on the Geographical Indications Agreement and expanded use of GSP+.
Visa facilitation and energy cooperation
During a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker of Parliament J.Bat-Erdene, MEP Princi confirmed that the European Parliament had formally requested the European Commission and Council to initiate a visa facilitation agreement with Mongolia, modelled on the framework used with Kazakhstan. The delegation also met with Minister of Energy Naidalaa Badrakh to discuss energy sector reforms and renewable energy potential, and visited the Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association and Evseg Cashmere Factory, sectors that could benefit from the Geographical Indications Agreement.
Industrial and environmental engagement
On 29 May, the delegation travelled to Baganuur District with Minister of Environment Sandag-Ochir, visiting the Baganuur Electromechanical Plant and meeting with the district governor. The visit provided insight into Mongolia's industrial infrastructure and environmental challenges linked to coal mining, directly relevant to EU–Mongolia cooperation on green transition and UNCCD COP17. The delegation also met with faculty and students at the National University of Mongolia.
The 19th EU–Mongolia Inter-Parliamentary Meeting is scheduled to take place in Brussels in 2027.
