MEP Daniel Buda (PPE) has called on the European Commission to establish a European rapid response mechanism for agriculture affected by natural disasters, combining emergency compensation with medium-term support to restore infrastructure, biological capital and productive capacity.
In a written parliamentary question submitted on 14 June 2026, Buda argued that one-time support is often insufficient to relaunch agricultural activity after disasters that damage soils, livestock and production capacity for several years. He noted that recent EU exceptional aid for farmers remains largely reactive and context-dependent.
The question asks whether the Commission is considering a clearer, faster mechanism focused on effective restoration of productive potential rather than just compensation. Buda did not propose specific funding levels or timelines, but the question signals a push for a more structural EU intervention in agricultural disaster response.
The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. Its answer will indicate whether it is open to developing such a mechanism, which would affect EU farmers, national agricultural authorities, EU budget planners and the broader agri-food sector.
