Renew Europe MEP Billy Kelleher has raised concerns with the European Commission over the welfare of calves transported from Ireland to the Netherlands, following a recent investigation into the trade. The written parliamentary question, submitted on 28 April 2026, seeks clarity on whether the transport complies with EU animal welfare rules and what enforcement measures are in place.

The question, addressed to the Commission, asks for details on the findings of the investigation and whether any breaches of Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport were identified. Kelleher specifically inquires about the duration of journeys, rest periods, and conditions for calves, which are often transported at a young age.

Kelleher's intervention targets the welfare of young animals in long-distance transport, a sensitive issue for farmers, animal welfare groups, and consumers. The MEP calls for the Commission to outline any corrective actions taken or planned, and whether the investigation has prompted a review of transport authorisations.

The Commission is expected to respond within six weeks. Its reply will signal the executive's stance on enforcement of animal welfare rules in intra-EU trade and may indicate whether further regulatory action is anticipated.
