The European Union's Education Committee is scheduled to meet on 16 and 17 July 2026 in Brussels to adopt its agenda and discuss items presented by the Presidency and Commission, according to a notice of meeting and provisional agenda published by the Council on 10 July 2026. The meeting will focus on the structure of working groups for the second cycle of the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training towards the European Education Area (2026-2030), an AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education, and draft Council conclusions on skills and competences for artificial intelligence.
The meeting, to be held in the Justus Lipsius building, will begin at 10:00 each day. The agenda includes an exchange of views on the working group structure for the 2026-2030 strategic framework, which will be presented by the Commission. This framework aims to deepen cooperation among member states to build a European Education Area. A structured discussion is planned on empowering learners for the age of AI, focusing on an AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education, also presented by the Commission. Additionally, the Presidency will present draft Council conclusions on skills and competences for AI (document 11497/26) for a first exchange of views.
The meeting will also include information from the Presidency and the Commission, as well as any other business. The outcomes of this meeting will shape the committee's work plan for the coming years and influence EU-level policy on AI in education. Stakeholders impacted include EU member state education ministries, schools and teachers, students, and the edtech industry, as new frameworks and conclusions may lead to changes in curricula, teacher training, and investment in AI tools. The meeting is procedural but sets the stage for future policy decisions.
