Two Non-Attached MEPs, Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos and Kostas Papadakis, have submitted a parliamentary question to the EU's foreign policy chief, urging the bloc to condemn Israel's alleged plans to partition Lebanon and to immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The question, filed on 21 April 2026, targets the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The MEPs accuse Israel of promoting a 'peace plan' that would involve a permanent military presence and a buffer zone in southern Lebanon, citing a map published by the Israeli army showing occupied territories extending into a maritime zone. They argue this move is linked to energy reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean's Exclusive Economic Zone. The question also criticises the Commission for its involvement in a so-called 'Peace Council' alongside the US and Israel.

Concrete asks and policy orientation The question contains two concrete demands: first, that the High Representative state her view on Israel's invasion and partition plans as a violation of Lebanon's territorial integrity; second, that she call for an immediate halt to the EU-Israel Association Agreement and all forms of EU cooperation with Israel, framing this as a response to popular demands. The MEPs do not propose alternative diplomatic measures or timelines, focusing instead on a clear break in relations.

Expected follow-up The High Representative is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. The answer will signal the EU's stance on Israel's actions in Lebanon and whether the bloc is willing to reconsider its partnership with Israel, a move that would have major implications for EU foreign policy coherence and its role in the Middle East.
