The Government advanced priority coastal interventions in Caminha, Mira, and Ovar, with an investment of 174 million euros to 2027 to respond to storm damage and ensure safety and stability of the coastline. On April 7, Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho accompanied on-site the main intervention fronts, underscoring the priority given to restoring safety conditions and stabilizing the coastline. 571 damages were identified along the coast, with urgent interventions already in progress amounting to 27 million euros. “We want to ensure safety conditions and protect the populations and the local economy,” the Minister said. In Caminha, emergency works are underway at Moledo beach to stabilize the sea wall after its partial collapse and restore safety conditions of the beach and surrounding infrastructures. In Mira, sand replenishment is planned for the beaches of Mira and Poço da Cruz, with an investment of one million euros, to be completed by early June. The intervention addresses significant erosion of the beaches caused by the storms and aims to ensure normality and safety. In the municipality of Ovar, works on Furadouro beach include reconstruction of the marginal wall, reinforcement of the dune cord, and interventions at Barrinha de Esmoriz, to protect populations and infrastructure. The evolution of the beach is being monitored, with the possible need for additional sand replenishment and a structural intervention planned after the summer. The Government adopts an integrated strategy with the municipalities and the Portuguese Environment Agency, combining immediate response with structural solutions to reinforce coastal resilience against extreme events.
