On 1 July 2026, the European Parliament's plenary received amendments tabled by the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group to the draft report on the changing geopolitical situation in East Asia and the need for closer cooperation with like-minded partners in the region. The three amendments, proposed by ECR MEP Adam Bielan, are exclusively technical updates to factual references in the report's recitals, updating dates, locations, and sequential numbering of recent EU-Japan dialogues and meetings. No substantive policy changes are proposed.

The amendments update references to three EU-Japan dialogues. Amendment 10 revises the mention of the EU-Japan Strategic Dialogue from the 2nd meeting (4 April 2025 in Brussels) to the 3rd meeting (26 March 2026 in Vaux-de-Cernay). Amendment 11 updates the EU-Japan Digital Policy Dialogue from the 8th meeting (1 April 2025 in Brussels) to the 9th meeting (25 March 2026 in Tokyo). Amendment 12 changes the reference to the EU-Japan Digital Partnership Council from the third meeting (May 2025) to the fourth meeting (May 2026) and adjusts the description of the '6G MIRAI-HARMONY' joint research project from "included the launch of" to "welcomed the progress on," reflecting the project's advancement since its launch.

As only the ECR Group tabled amendments, there is no divergence of positions to compare. The underlying report, drafted by rapporteur Adam Bielan, is a non-legislative initiative report (2025/2169(INI)) recommending closer cooperation with like-minded partners in East Asia. The amendments are proposed for consideration in plenary and, if adopted, would be incorporated into the final text. The report is expected to be voted on later in the session.
