On 25 June 2026, the European Commission proposed a Council Decision to approve a cooperation agreement between Eurojust and Algeria, establishing a legal basis for the exchange of personal data in criminal matters. The agreement aims to strengthen judicial cooperation against serious cross-border crime by enabling Eurojust to work directly with Algerian authorities, while ensuring safeguards for privacy and fundamental rights.

The proposal follows negotiations authorized by the Council in March 2021, which concluded at the technical level in August 2025. Algeria provided final approval in February 2026. The agreement aligns with the Eurojust Regulation, which requires such international agreements for operational data exchanges with third countries.

The agreement is expected to have a moderate positive impact on EU law enforcement agencies by facilitating cooperation with Algeria on cross-border crime, including terrorism and organized crime. It also imposes data protection obligations on both parties, affecting privacy rights. The Council must now adopt the decision before the agreement can enter into force.
