Eleven MEPs from The Left group, led by Emma Fourreau, have submitted a written parliamentary question to the European Commission on 17 June 2026, raising concerns about tourism developments in Albania financed by Jared Kushner's investment fund. The projects, located on Sazan Island and within the Vjosa-Narta protected area, have sparked popular protests. The MEPs argue that these hotel developments risk damaging protected coastal and marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and habitats of threatened species, and question their compatibility with Albania's EU accession commitments.

The question specifically asks the Commission to assess the compatibility of real estate investments linked to the family of a non-EU head of state with transparency and good governance standards expected of EU candidate countries. It also requests measures to ensure that the mega-projects do not undermine Albania's alignment with the EU environmental acquis, given previous EU concerns about 2024 amendments to Albania's law on protected areas.

that Albania should not be sold off piecemeal for the benefit of ultra-rich private interests and imperial ambitions associated with the Trump family. Sazan Island lies within the Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park, a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI), making the projects particularly sensitive under EU environmental standards.

The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. Its response will signal the EU's stance on the compatibility of such foreign-linked investments with accession criteria and environmental commitments, and may indicate whether the EU will take further action to protect Albania's protected areas during the accession process.
