Alessandro Ciriani, an Italian MEP from the European Conservatives and Reformists group, has asked the European Commission to investigate emissions from the Livarna Gorica foundry in Slovenia, which he says are causing serious environmental and health problems for residents in the Italian border city of Gorizia. In a parliamentary question submitted on 5 June 2026, Ciriani cited data from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPA FVG) showing a sharp increase in odour complaints since May 2025, with 140 reports in September 2025, 96 in November, 109 in February 2026 and 93 in March 2026, mostly from the Montesanto area near the border. The MEP is pressing the Commission to request information from Slovenian authorities, verify compliance with the Industrial Emissions Directive (2010/75/EU) and best available techniques, and promote stable cross-border air quality monitoring in the Gorizia-Nova Gorica area. The question, which targets concrete action from the Commission, reflects growing local frustration over a long-standing cross-border pollution issue. The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks, and its answer will signal whether it views the case as a priority for enforcement of EU environmental law.
