A meeting of the JHA Counsellors (Asylum) scheduled for 29 June 2026 in Brussels will consider extending temporary protection for displaced persons until 4 March 2028, according to a notice of meeting and provisional agenda published by the Council of the European Union on 26 June 2026. The agenda item, introduced by the European Commission, builds on Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/382, which originally activated the Temporary Protection Directive in response to the mass influx from Ukraine.

The Commission is set to present the proposal, followed by an exchange of views among member state representatives. The meeting, taking place at the Council's Europa building at 14:30, will operate under a 1+1 format (with the Presidency allowed 2+2). The extension would mark a further prolongation of a mechanism that has been renewed multiple times since its activation in March 2022, providing immediate protection to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons across the EU. If adopted, the decision would maintain the legal status, access to housing, education, and labor markets for beneficiaries until early 2028. The proposal reflects ongoing displacement challenges and the need for continued EU coordination on migration and asylum policy. No formal decision is expected at this counsellors-level meeting, which serves as a preparatory step for the Council's final adoption.
