The European Parliament has given its consent to a Council decision that updates the management rules for the financial consequences of the expired European Coal and Steel Community Treaty and the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, repealing two earlier decisions. The consent, conveyed in a cover note from the Council's General Secretariat dated 23 June 2026, covers a proposal for a Council decision implementing Protocol No 37 annexed to the EU treaties. The decision repeals Decisions 2003/76/EC and 2008/376/EC, which previously governed the fund's administration and the research programme. The interinstitutional file reference is 2025/0390 (APP). The Parliament's approval, required under the special legislative procedure, paves the way for the Council to formally adopt the decision. The updated framework aims to streamline the management of assets and research funding derived from the former ECSC, which expired in 2002. The Research Fund for Coal and Steel continues to support research in these sectors. The repeal of the earlier decisions consolidates the legal framework into a single instrument. The Council is expected to adopt the decision in the coming weeks, after which it will enter into force upon publication in the Official Journal.
