The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) have completed a major upgrade of the Monte Carlo Risk Assessment (MCRA) platform, introducing an automated data transfer workflow via a web application programming interface (API) that enables real-time retrieval of standard regulatory action (SRA) data from the EFSA data warehouse. The enhancements, detailed in an external scientific report published on 29 July 2026, also include an updated data mapping tool that transforms retrieved data into MCRA-compliant datasets, and security optimizations following a recent security quick scan. These improvements are designed to strengthen the platform's capacity to support cumulative risk assessment (CRA) for dietary exposure to mixtures of pesticide residues, a priority for both EFSA and the European Commission.

The MCRA platform, a web-based tool for chemical risk assessment, has been developed through a series of partnerships between EFSA and RIVM. The third framework partnership agreement (FPA3; 2021-2026), titled "Development of the Open MCRA platform," aimed to increase transparency, accessibility, and interoperability, and to facilitate co-creation and integration with external data sources and models. The latest work, carried out under the fourth specific agreement of FPA3, focused on improving data connectivity and security. The report notes that the automated API-based workflow replaces manual data handling, reducing the risk of errors and ensuring that risk assessors always work with the most current data. The security enhancements address vulnerabilities identified in a prior assessment, safeguarding the platform against unauthorized access.

The upgrade primarily benefits risk assessors and managers at EFSA, national food safety authorities, and the European Commission, who rely on MCRA for conducting both retrospective and prospective cumulative dietary exposure assessments according to harmonised methodologies. For pesticide producers and the broader agri-food industry, the improved platform may lead to more consistent and transparent regulatory decisions on maximum residue limits (MRLs), potentially reducing uncertainty in market access. However, the increased automation and data integration could also impose new compliance expectations on industry stakeholders, who may need to ensure their own data submission processes align with the platform's updated requirements. Consumer and environmental groups stand to gain from more robust and timely risk assessments, which can better protect public health from cumulative pesticide exposure. The report does not specify a timeline for the next phase of development, but the transition to an operational phase suggests that further refinements and broader adoption of the platform are anticipated in the coming years.
