Force Commander Rear Admiral Milos Argenton visited a merchant vessel (MV) in the Red Sea on 10 July 2026, as part of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES operations, to demonstrate the EU's commitment to freedom of navigation and to strengthen trust with the maritime community. The Italian Frigate BERGAMINI, operating under the EU naval mission, provided support and conducted a friendly approach to the MV during its transit through the critical waterway.

The visit, announced by the European External Action Service (EEAS), underscores the operational role of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES in safeguarding shipping and ensuring safe passage for vessels through high-risk maritime routes. Rear Admiral Argenton met with the Master of the MV to highlight the mission's dedication to protecting commercial traffic amid ongoing regional tensions.

EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, launched in February 2024, is the EU's defensive naval operation aimed at restoring and safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and surrounding waters. The mission has been conducting patrols, escorting vessels, and providing maritime situational awareness to counter threats from Houthi attacks on commercial shipping. The force commander's direct engagement with a merchant vessel crew reflects the operation's focus on building confidence among shipping companies and seafarers operating in the region.

The visit also serves to reassure the international maritime community of the EU's continued presence and readiness to respond to security challenges. The operation involves naval assets from several EU member states and coordinates with other international naval forces in the area.
