The European Union and the National Blood Institute of Lao PDR organised a series of blood donation events on 11 June in Vientiane Capital and on 16 June in Savannakhet Province to mark World Blood Donor Day, with a third event held on 12 June at the UN House in Vientiane in collaboration with the United Nations. The initiative aims to address blood shortages in the country and strengthen preparedness during the dengue fever season, which typically increases demand for blood products. The events brought together government officials, development partners, civil servants, members of the diplomatic community, and the public.
The EU highlighted that the campaign also seeks to strengthen ties between Europeans and Laotians through solidarity, noting that some blood types more common among Europeans are less readily available in Laos. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting public health initiatives and improving wellbeing in Lao PDR.
