MEP Giuseppe Antoci (The Left) has submitted a written parliamentary question to the European Commission, pressing for concrete measures to address the bleak economic prospects for young people in Sicily.

Citing an OECD report on Italy, Antoci highlights stagnant real wages, a high tax burden, and continued fossil fuel dependence as structural challenges that fuel youth unemployment, brain drain, and precarious work in the region. The question, filed on 24 April 2026, targets three specific areas: cohesion policy and NextGenerationEU funding to combat youth unemployment and brain drain; EU strategies to support real wage growth and fairer income distribution for young workers; and fiscal reform recommendations for Italy to ease the burden on young people and spur stable employment. The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks, and its answer will signal the EU's policy direction on addressing regional disparities and youth economic inclusion in southern Europe.
