The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Union (EU), Austria, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the TaiwanBusiness – EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund have partnered with the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to organise a community clean-up event in Amman, according to a press release from the EU Delegation to Jordan on 5 July 2026. The one-day event on 4 July 2026 brought together young people, families and local stakeholders for a hands-on clean-up of a public park, alongside a public discussion on waste management challenges and solutions. Attendees included Youssef Shawarbeh, Mayor of Amman, Gretchen Biery, EBRD Director for the Eastern Mediterranean region, and Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, EU ambassador to Jordan.
The event is part of a broader initiative supported by the EBRD and its donors to improve solid waste management and promote sustainable urban development in Jordan. It complements ongoing infrastructure investments by addressing behavioural and community dimensions. The EBRD has worked with GAM since 2015, with support from the EU and the EBRD Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Multi Donor Account, funded by Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Taiwan Business-EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund, and the United Kingdom. These efforts include financing an additional landfill cell at Al Ghabawi landfill and a landfill gas recovery system that generates electricity from waste. Amman has also joined the EBRD Green Cities programme, under which the EBRD, GCF and EU-backed guarantees support critical solid waste management investments. In 2019, the EBRD and EU implemented a solid waste awareness campaign in 20 public schools in Amman, reaching over 2,000 students.
The clean-up event reinforces these efforts by empowering citizens to take an active role in protecting their environment, helping build more sustainable and resilient communities across Amman. The initiative impacts local residents through improved environmental conditions and awareness, the Greater Amman Municipality through enhanced waste management practices, the EBRD and EU as funders and partners, and the environment through reduced waste and better disposal.
