MEP Nikos Pappas (The Left) has asked the European Commission to disclose detailed information on the outcomes of Greece's free afternoon surgery programme, funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). In a parliamentary question dated 30 June 2026, Pappas questioned whether the Greek authorities have provided complete data on the number of operations performed and the absorption of funds, and whether the Commission plans to publish this information. The programme, which aimed to reduce waiting times in the public health system, ended on 30 June 2026, but Pappas noted that a full account of its physical and financial scope has not been made public.

The question targets transparency and accountability in the use of RRF resources, a key concern for The Left group. Pappas specifically asked whether the public information provided so far meets the transparency requirements attached to RRF funds. He also inquired what measures the Commission would take if initial quantitative targets were not met or if planned resources were not fully used, to ensure proper implementation and evaluation.

The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. The answer will signal the Commission's stance on monitoring RRF-funded health projects and its willingness to enforce transparency standards. The outcome could affect public trust in RRF spending and set a precedent for similar health initiatives in other member states.
