On 22 May 2026, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion concluding that the feed additive Xygest HT, a preparation of endo-1,4-β-xylanase produced by Komagataella phaffii ATCC PTA-127053, is safe and effective for all porcine species when used as a zootechnical additive. The opinion, requested by the European Commission, paves the way for potential EU authorisation of the product marketed by Kemin Europa N.V.

The additive is intended to improve feed digestibility by breaking down arabinoxylans in cereal-based diets, thereby enhancing nutrient utilisation in pigs. EFSA's Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) assessed data from tolerance, efficacy, and genotoxicity studies. The panel concluded that Xygest HT poses no safety concerns for target animals, consumers of animal products, or the environment under the proposed conditions of use. No risks for users were identified provided appropriate protective measures are taken.

Stakeholder impact For pig farmers and feed manufacturers, the opinion supports the availability of a new tool to improve feed efficiency, potentially lowering production costs and reducing nutrient excretion. For Kemin Europa N.V., a positive EFSA opinion is a prerequisite for EU market access, offering a competitive advantage in the enzyme feed additive sector. Consumer safety is assured, as no residues of concern were found in edible tissues. The opinion also aligns with EU sustainability goals by promoting more efficient livestock production.

Institutional follow-up The European Commission will now consider EFSA's opinion in the authorisation process under Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003. If approved, Xygest HT would join the EU Register of Feed Additives, subject to specific conditions of use.
