Renew Europe MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk has asked the European Commission to outline a coordinated EU strategy for addressing energy security, inflationary pressures, and economic resilience in light of escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil supplies transit. The question, submitted on 8 April 2026, targets the impact on households, businesses, and particularly SMEs and energy-intensive industries.

In his written question, Kyuchyuk notes that rising oil and fuel prices are already heightening inflationary pressures and creating economic difficulties. He references international efforts led by the UK, involving around 35 countries, to discuss coordinated diplomatic and potentially military measures to restore freedom of navigation.

first, whether the Commission has a comprehensive strategy for EU participation in international efforts to secure freedom of navigation, including diplomatic, economic, and other means; second, what short-term extraordinary measures are being contemplated to limit fuel price increases and contain inflation, including use of strategic reserves and coordinated fiscal or regulatory initiatives; and third, what medium-term policies are planned to protect competitiveness, especially for SMEs and energy-intensive industries, and to strengthen EU strategic autonomy and resilience against geopolitical shocks.

The question contains specific asks—such as the use of strategic reserves and coordinated fiscal measures—but does not set numerical targets or deadlines. It signals a policy orientation toward proactive EU engagement in international security efforts, short-term price containment, and longer-term economic resilience and strategic autonomy.

The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. Its answer will indicate the extent to which the EU is prepared to coordinate with international partners on maritime security, activate emergency energy measures, and pursue structural reforms to reduce vulnerability to external shocks.
