On 6 July 2026, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning war crimes and escalating violations of international humanitarian law in El-Obeid, Sudan, and calling for urgent EU action. The resolution, tabled by MEPs Yannis Maniatis, Francisco Assis, and Marit Maij on behalf of the S&D Group, notes that over 33 million people need aid, 19 million face acute hunger, 13 million are displaced, and hundreds of thousands may have been killed in the conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Since 6 June, the RSF have conducted drone attacks on El-Obeid, killing civilians, and are reportedly preparing a ground offensive; the United Arab Emirates is named as the RSF's main external enabler.

The resolution urges the RSF to lift the siege on El-Obeid, calls for a nationwide ceasefire, safe humanitarian access, and an African Union-led protection force. It demands that the EU impose targeted sanctions on RSF commanders, expand the International Criminal Court's jurisdiction to all of Sudan, and consider adding the RSF to the EU's terrorist list. The Parliament also calls for increased EU humanitarian funding for Sudan and neighbouring refugee camps, with specific support for child protection and survivors of sexual violence.

The resolution represents the European Parliament's position, which will be transmitted to the European Commission, the European External Action Service, and EU member states for consideration. No prior coverage of this file exists in the last 180 days.
