Fertilizers Europe will participate in the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) on 22 June 2026 with a panel titled 'Bringing H2 to Industry,' focusing on the hydrogen economy from the perspective of industrial consumers. The fertilizer industry, which produces and consumes about 40% of total European hydrogen, is uniquely positioned to contribute to the EU Green Deal and the development of a hydrogen economy. The panel will highlight green ammonia as a carbon-free energy carrier with potential for hydrogen storage and as a fuel to decarbonize shipping by 95% by 2035. Panelists include Nicolas Baglin (Saint-Gobain), Jorgo Chatzimarkakis (Hydrogen Europe), Matthias Deutsch (Agora Energiewende), David Herrero Fuentes (Grupo Fertiberia), Catharina Sikow-Magny (European Commission), Thierry Trouve (GRTgaz), and Philipp Tschinke (Salzgitter AG).
This event follows recent industry calls for regulatory flexibility and harmonisation to support hydrogen infrastructure development. On 13 April 2026, GEODE urged regulatory flexibility for the transition from gas to hydrogen networks, advocating for the repurposing of existing gas assets to minimise transformation costs. GEODE also cautioned that the German regulator's hydrogen roadmap demands exceed legal mandates, risking viability for distribution operators. Earlier, on 9 April 2026, Hydrogen Europe called for harmonised EU rules on the 'Do No Significant Harm' principle for hydrogen projects, citing inconsistent application across Member States that creates uncertainty and slows investments. The panel at EUSEW will bring together industry, regulatory, and research perspectives to address these challenges and advance the hydrogen economy for industrial consumers.
