The European Union strongly condemned the 29 May 2026 incident in which a Russian drone carrying explosives crashed into a residential building in Galați, Romania, during an overnight attack against Ukraine. In a statement delivered at the OSCE 100th Joint FSC-PC meeting in Vienna on 2 June 2026 and published by the EEAS on 15 June 2026, the EU expressed full solidarity with Romania and those affected, calling the act a reckless violation of EU airspace and a direct result of Russia's war of aggression.

The EU reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the security of Romania and all member states, and said it stands ready to accelerate efforts to strengthen protection against such threats, including through the Eastern Flank Watch and other initiatives to consolidate European Defence Readiness. The bloc will continue advancing initiatives to strengthen defence of all EU land, air and maritime border capabilities, particularly on the Eastern Flank, reinforcing defence readiness and consolidating resilience. The statement emphasised the need for a coordinated 360-degree approach.

The incident reinforces the EU's resolve to support Ukraine in its defence against Russia's war of aggression and its pursuit of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law. The EU said it will further raise the cost for Moscow and disrupt its war machine by ramping up sanctions, and will work with international partners to pressure Russia to end the war.

Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Republic of Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, San Marino and Ukraine aligned themselves with the statement.

The incident directly threatens the security of EU citizens in border states, particularly Romania, and increases pressure on EU defence budgets and coordination. EU defence industries may benefit from accelerated procurement under Eastern Flank Watch. Russia faces intensified sanctions and diplomatic isolation. Ukraine gains renewed political backing but no new concrete military commitments in the statement.
