On 26 June 2026, the European Commission proposed a Council Implementing Decision to extend the temporary protection for persons displaced from Ukraine, introduced by Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/382, until 4 March 2028. The proposal aims to provide continued legal certainty and support for over 4 million beneficiaries currently in the EU, maintaining their access to residence, employment, housing, healthcare, and education. The extension reflects the ongoing instability and security risks in Ukraine, which prevent safe return. The Council must adopt the decision by qualified majority, and the European Parliament will be consulted. If approved, the protection will be extended for another year, from 5 March 2027 to 4 March 2028, marking the sixth extension since the mechanism was activated in March 2022. The Commission's proposal is based on a comprehensive assessment of the situation in Ukraine and the capacity of Member States to host displaced persons. The extension is expected to be formally adopted by the Council in the coming weeks, ensuring continuity for beneficiaries and host countries alike.
