MEP Geadis Geadi (ECR) has called on the European Commission to outline funding and technical support available to Cyprus to address severe shortages in mental health services, including overcrowding at Athalassa Hospital where patient numbers double capacity. In a parliamentary question submitted on 9 July 2026, Geadi also asked whether an EU institution could monitor treatment programmes in voluntary and involuntary hospitalisation facilities and advise on psychosocial alternatives to medication.

The question highlights a stark gap between Cyprus and EU averages: 18 psychiatric beds per 100,000 inhabitants versus the European average of 73, according to the Pan-Cyprian Association for Mental Health Organisations. Geadi noted that wards designed for 60 patients at Athalassa Hospital now hold around 120, with some patients sleeping on mattresses on the floor, alongside understaffing, medicine shortages, and inadequate psychosocial programmes. A three-year national strategy for 2025-2028 exists but community care remains weak, with insufficient sheltered accommodation, day centres, and family support.

Geadi's first question seeks concrete EU funding and technical assistance for completing the new Athalassa Hospital, developing community mental health infrastructure, and implementing the National Action Plan. The second question probes whether an EU body could oversee treatment content in both voluntary and involuntary settings, providing training in therapeutic approaches beyond medication, such as psychosocial support programmes recommended by modern psychiatry.

The European Commission typically has six weeks to respond to parliamentary questions. The answer will signal the extent of EU solidarity and available instruments—such as the EU4Health programme, European Social Fund+, or Technical Support Instrument—for member states facing mental health infrastructure crises, and whether the Commission sees a role for EU-level oversight of psychiatric treatment standards.
