Ten MEPs from five political groups have asked the European Commission to publish a structured follow-up to the recommendations of the European Citizens' Panel on Preparedness, pressing for concrete implementation plans, timelines, and responsible services. The written question, submitted on 3 July 2026, targets three specific issues: the overall follow-up mechanism, the panel's recommendation on volunteering, and the proposal for a European Preparedness Week.

The European Citizens' Panel on Preparedness, which concluded recently, brought together 150 randomly selected citizens from all 27 member states and produced 20 recommendations aimed at strengthening the EU's capacity to prevent and respond to crises. The recommendations cover risk communication, warning systems, information integrity, inclusion, citizens' self-sufficiency, volunteering, and education on preparedness. The Commission has stated its intention to incorporate these recommendations into the implementation of the Preparedness Union Strategy.

In their question, the MEPs ask the Commission to publish a structured follow-up detailing which recommendations will be taken forward, by which services, and within what timeframe. They also seek specific information on how the Commission intends to follow up on recommendation 5.1 concerning volunteering and the strengthening of volunteer work, and how it assesses the proposal to establish a European Preparedness Week as part of the follow-up.

The signatories include Pascal Arimont (PPE), Joachim Streit (Renew), Thomas Pellerin-Carlin (S&D), Matej Tonin (PPE), Grégory Allione (Renew), Liesbet Sommen (PPE), Olivier Chastel (Renew), Vladimir Prebilič (Verts/ALE), Aurelijus Veryga (ECR), and Christophe Clergeau (S&D). The question reflects cross-party interest in ensuring that citizen input translates into tangible EU action on crisis preparedness.

The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks. Its response will signal how seriously it intends to integrate citizen-generated recommendations into the Preparedness Union Strategy and whether it will adopt new initiatives such as a dedicated Preparedness Week.
