The European Union will deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Zambia for the general elections scheduled on 13 August 2026, following a formal invitation from the Zambian government. High Representative Kaja Kallas has appointed Michael McNamara, a Member of the European Parliament, as Chief Observer. McNamara said he was honoured to lead the sixth EU EOM to Zambia, noting that the EU has observed every general election in the country since 2001, reflecting a long-standing partnership. He looks forward to engaging with state institutions, political parties, civil society, and other electoral stakeholders.
The mission will provide a comprehensive, independent, and impartial assessment of the electoral process based on Zambia's legal framework and international standards. A core team of eleven election experts is scheduled to arrive in Zambia at the end of June. They will be joined by 32 Long-Term Observers deployed across the country ahead of election day, and later by 32 Short-Term Observers. After the elections, the mission will issue a preliminary statement and hold a press conference. A final report with recommendations for future electoral processes will be presented to stakeholders after the entire electoral process is completed.
