In a written answer on 16 July 2026, Executive Vice-President Fitto told MEP Zsuzsanna Borvendég (ESN) that the Commission found no irregularities in the EU co-funded project linked to the eviction of the Premonstratensian chapter house in Oradea, and that the conditions for applying the Rule of Law Conditionality Regulation are not currently met. The answer, which responds to a follow-up question from Borvendég, reiterates the Commission's earlier position from its reply to question E-1744/2026. Fitto stated that after relevant assessments, no irregularities were found in the EU co-funded project (SMIS 316653, worth EUR 24 million). He noted that the Charter of Fundamental Rights applies to member states only when implementing EU law, and that national authorities bear primary responsibility for fundamental rights compliance. The Commission continues to monitor the situation but does not see grounds for infringement proceedings or the rule of law mechanism at this stage.

The answer offers no concrete proposals or timelines, remaining declaratory in tone. Borvendég had alleged that Romanian bailiffs and gendarmerie violently evicted the provost on 27 May 2026, damaging a listed building, and that the eviction violated property rights, religious freedom, and the rule of law. The Commission's response effectively closes the file for now, though monitoring continues.
