The Delegation of the European Union to Thailand, in collaboration with 19 EU Member States embassies and cultural institutions, launched the 32nd European Union Film Festival in Thailand on 17 June 2026 at The Siam Society Under Royal Patronage in Bangkok. The festival, running from 18 to 28 June 2026, presents 21 films from 19 countries curated by the EU Delegation and participating member states. EU Ambassador to Thailand Luisa Ragher said the theme 'See Beyond, Feel Beyond' invites viewers to look deeper into stories about people, relationships, social change, and emotions, adding that cinema can build bridges of understanding and strengthen EU-Thailand relations.
The opening night screened 'Breathing Underwater', a 2024 Belgian-Luxembourgish film directed by Eric Lamhène, and welcomed over 120 guests including representatives from Thailand's Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats, arts and film figures, and business, academic, and civil society leaders. Participating countries are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden. Screenings take place at The Siam Society, House Samyan Cinema, and Lido Connect in Bangkok; Alliance Française in Chiang Mai; and BCIS International School and Satree Phuket School in Phuket. All screenings are free on a first-come, first-served basis, with tickets available one hour before each showtime.
The festival aims to foster cultural dialogue between the EU and Thailand, showcasing European cinema as a tool for cross-cultural understanding. No prior EU film festival events in Thailand have been covered in recent months.
