A joint One Health Summit statement urges Europe to shift from reactive to preventive animal health measures.
It highlights EU investments totaling €700 million to the Global Fund for HIV, TB and malaria, €46.5 million for health security in Africa and Europe, and €50 million for AMR and neglected tropical diseases R&D. Signatories call for a fundamental paradigm shift toward prevention, reinforcing vaccination, biosecurity, and surveillance while reducing mass culling. They cite WOAH, the European Parliament, and the European Council as aligning with these aims, and note substantial costs from animal disease outbreaks, such as 547 million poultry losses (2023-2025) and a €1 billion hit from a 2025 FMD incident in buffalo. The statement urges harmonised standards, public-private partnerships, and international acceptance of preventive vaccination, advocating a transition to disease-free with vaccination status to ease trade barriers. Signatories include Access Vet Med, AVEC, CEJA, Copa Cogeca, EFFAB, Euro Foie Gras, FEAP, FEFAC, FEFANA, FVE, UECBV, and Animalhealth Europe, framing prevention as key to safeguarding health, farming communities, and sustainable food production within the EU and globally.
