The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published a scientific opinion assessing the renewal of authorisation for the feed additive zinc bislysinate (3b613) for all animal species, concluding that it remains safe under the approved conditions. The opinion, released on 26 May 2026, was prepared by EFSA's Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) at the request of the applicant, Senzyme GmbH.
The document evaluates data submitted for the renewal of the additive, which is used as a source of zinc in animal nutrition. EFSA's assessment confirmed that the additive does not pose any additional risks to target animals, consumers, or the environment compared to the original authorisation. The opinion also notes that the additive is effective as a zinc source and that no new safety concerns have emerged since the previous evaluation.
This scientific opinion is a mandatory step in the renewal process under Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition. The European Commission will now consider EFSA's findings before deciding whether to renew the authorisation. The additive is currently authorised for use in all animal species.
Stakeholder impact: For feed additive manufacturers and livestock producers, the renewal ensures continued access to a zinc source essential for animal health. Consumers and regulators benefit from the reaffirmed safety profile. No significant trade-offs were identified in the opinion.
