Sixteen MEPs, led by Geadis Geadi (ECR), have submitted a priority written question to the European Commission demanding immediate measures to address what they describe as a deliberate escalation by Turkish occupation forces in the UN buffer zone in Cyprus. The MEPs warn that the deployment of 15 battle tanks, additional military vehicles, and personnel near civilian areas inhabited by EU citizens creates heightened fear and insecurity, and that the raising of a Turkish flag in the buffer zone constitutes a provocative act.
The question, filed on 21 April 2026 under Rule 144, asks the Commission what immediate steps it will take to prevent further escalation, whether it is considering stronger measures in response to repeated Turkish actions, and how it will ensure the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, noting that under Protocol No 10 to the EU Accession Treaty the occupied territories and buffer zone are European territory.
Concrete asks and policy orientation The question contains three concrete demands: immediate steps to address violations, consideration of stronger measures, and a specific legal reminder about EU territorial scope. The MEPs frame the issue as a matter of EU territorial integrity and citizen security, urging the Commission to move beyond diplomatic statements toward tangible action.
Expected follow-up The Commission is required to reply within approximately six weeks. The answer will signal whether the EU executive views the tank deployment as a serious breach warranting sanctions or other measures, or whether it will maintain a cautious diplomatic approach toward Ankara.
