A new paragraph proposed for a European Parliament resolution on the impact of the 1974 Turkish invasion on Cypriot women and girls calls for an EU-wide definition of rape based on the absence of freely given consent, in line with the Istanbul Convention. The amendment, tabled by MEPs from the S&D, Greens/EFA, and The Left groups, would add a Paragraph 9a to the motion for a resolution, urging the European Commission to propose legislation establishing a consent-based rape definition and calling on Member States to align their national laws with Article 36 of the Istanbul Convention. The amendment is currently under consideration by the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and has not yet been voted on by the full Parliament.
