On 7 July 2026, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning escalating violence and potential war crimes in El-Obeid, Sudan, and calling for an immediate halt to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) assault. The resolution, tabled by MEPs Tomasz Froelich, Petr Bystron, and Marc Jongen on behalf of the ESN Group, demands that the RSF immediately cease its offensive and that all parties prevent attacks on civilians. It also calls for compliance with international humanitarian law and the Jeddah Declaration, and for an end to all external military support prolonging the conflict, while recognising the legitimate security interests of regional states.
The resolution highlights the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF since April 2023, noting that the RSF captured El Fasher in late October 2025 with ethnically targeted killings and sexual violence. As of late June 2026, RSF forces are concentrated around El-Obeid, raising fears of further atrocities. Over 14 million people have been displaced, and the resolution condemns violence across Sudan, especially in the Kordofan states, and targeted violence against Christian communities and non-Arab ethnic groups.
The Parliament calls for safe regional evacuation routes and cross-border humanitarian access across Africa, with a strict preference for placement in neighbouring countries and no pathways to Europe. It expresses concern about the destabilising effect of mass displacement and irregular migration flows towards Europe, challenging social cohesion and public security. The resolution also supports African Union and regional partners' peace efforts and calls for a coordinated European policy on arms flows and diplomatic engagement with key regional players.
