The Working Party on Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters (COPEN) is scheduled to meet on 7 July 2026 to examine a Presidency note on the proposal for a Directive on combating firearms trafficking and amending Directive (EU) 2024/1260. The meeting, set for 10:00 at the Council's LEX Building in Brussels, will focus on document 10510/26, which is yet to be issued. The agenda includes adoption of the agenda, examination of the Presidency note, and any other business.

This meeting follows the European Commission's proposal for a new directive aimed at strengthening the EU's legal framework against firearms trafficking. The proposal seeks to update existing rules, including Directive (EU) 2024/1260, to address evolving threats and improve cross-border cooperation among member states. The COPEN working party, which handles judicial cooperation in criminal matters, will review the Presidency note as part of the legislative process. The outcome of the meeting could shape the Council's position ahead of negotiations with the European Parliament. Delegations are required to register via the Delegates Portal, and Council documents will be available there, with room attendants providing copies on request.
