A corrigendum to Regulation (EU) 2019/125 concerning trade in goods used for capital punishment, torture, or cruel treatment has been published by the Council of the European Union on 23 July 2026, correcting the Spanish-language version of the legislative act. The original regulation was adopted on 16 January 2019 and entered into force shortly thereafter, establishing EU-wide controls on the export, import, and transit of certain equipment and pharmaceutical substances that could be misused for capital punishment or torture. The corrigendum does not introduce new policy provisions or alter the substance of the regulation; it only rectifies linguistic errors in the Spanish text to ensure legal clarity and uniform interpretation across member states. The correction applies retroactively to the date of the original regulation's adoption. For stakeholders, including EU exporters of medical or chemical products covered by the regulation's annexes, the corrigendum has no practical impact on compliance obligations, which remain unchanged. The European Commission and national customs authorities continue to enforce the existing rules, which require authorisation for listed goods and prohibit trade in items exclusively designed for capital punishment or torture.
