Várhelyi clarifies BSE rules unchanged in food safety omnibus, only procedural framework adapted

Agriculture, Food & Rural Development · Agri-food · parliamentary_answers · 2026-06-18

Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, in a written answer on 18 June 2026, clarified that the proposed Food and Feed Safety Omnibus does not alter current bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance or specified risk materials (SRM) rules, but only adjusts the legal framework to allow faster future updates based on scientific and epidemiological developments. The answer responds to a question by MEP Biljana Borzan. Várhelyi stressed that the current measures remain fully in place, and no alignment with a recent EFSA scientific opinion was needed for this proposal. The omnibus aims to streamline procedures for adapting to new scientific knowledge, international standards, and implementation experience, while maintaining high human and animal health protection. No immediate changes to BSE rules are foreseen, and the proposal does not address calls from some stakeholders to relax SRM lists or surveillance intensity.
