The Council of the European Union has issued a corrigendum dated 5 August 2026 to correct an error in the Greek language version of Directive (EU) 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment. The correction replaces the Greek word for "regime" with the word for "programme" in the definition of "extended producer responsibility scheme" in Article 3, point 10, aligning it with the wording used in Article 3, point 21, of Directive 2008/98/EC. The change applies only to the Greek text; all other language versions remain unaffected.
The corrigendum follows the procedure for obvious errors in a single language version, as set out in Council document R/2521/75. Member States have eight days from transmission to submit observations to the Council's legal service at dql.rectificatifs@consilium.europa.eu. The text has also been transmitted to the European Parliament.
This technical correction does not alter the substance of the 2019 Directive, which introduced a range of measures to reduce the impact of single-use plastics, including bans on certain products, consumption reduction targets, and extended producer responsibility schemes. The definition of "extended producer responsibility scheme" is central to the Directive's implementation, as it determines the obligations of producers to cover the costs of waste management and clean-up for certain plastic products.
The correction is expected to have minimal impact on stakeholders, as it merely harmonises the Greek terminology with the EU-wide definition. Producers and national authorities in Greece will benefit from clearer legal language, while other Member States and businesses operating across borders will see no change in their obligations. The eight-day observation window allows Member States to flag any concerns, but given the purely linguistic nature of the fix, no substantive objections are anticipated.
