On 25 June 2026, the European Commission published a proposal for a Council decision authorising the signing of an agreement between the European Union and Algeria that would allow Eurojust and Algerian judicial authorities to cooperate and exchange personal data in criminal matters. The agreement, negotiated from April 2022 to August 2025, with Algeria giving final agreement on 3 February 2026, provides a legal basis for exchanging personal data for judicial cooperation, with safeguards for privacy and fundamental rights. It stipulates that no information exchanged may be used in connection with the death penalty or human rights violations, and that a party may postpone personal data transfers as long as the other party has not implemented the required safeguards. The agreement shall not enter into application until both parties notify each other that obligations, including data protection, are fulfilled and accepted. The EU and Algeria shall jointly review implementation one year after entry into application, and evaluate it four years after entry into application. There are no budgetary implications for the Union budget. The proposal now awaits Council approval to proceed with signing.
