Türkiye has deployed four firefighting aircraft — two to Spain and two to France — to help contain the severe wildfires affecting both countries, the EU Delegation to Türkiye announced on 31 July 2026. The aircraft are part of a broader European response coordinated through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which has also mobilised emergency personnel and vehicles and is providing rapid satellite mapping via the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen thanked Türkiye, saying it had "long been a reliable partner for the EU" and that the deployment helps "protect lives and communities."
The deployment underscores Türkiye's role as a participating state in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism since 2016, through which member states and participating countries pool resources for disaster prevention, preparedness and response. The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre remains in close contact with French and Spanish authorities to coordinate assistance and assess further needs. The announcement follows a pattern of mutual solidarity: after the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye in February 2023, European countries rapidly mobilised search-and-rescue teams, medical teams, equipment and humanitarian aid through the same mechanism.
The move highlights the operational value of the Civil Protection Mechanism in cross-border emergencies, with Türkiye's contribution demonstrating how countries can share resources when lives and communities are at risk.
