The European Parliament has adopted a resolution condemning the 22-23 June 2026 massacre of at least 28 Christians in Kawel village, Plateau State, Nigeria, and calling on Nigerian authorities to investigate the attack, protect Christian communities, and uphold freedom of religion or belief. The resolution, tabled by unidentified MEPs and adopted on 6 July 2026, denounces the violence by armed Fulani militants and criticises the alleged failure of nearby troops to respond in time. It urges Nigeria to strengthen security for vulnerable communities, launch a national dialogue on violence, and address socio-economic factors driving attacks. The Parliament also calls on the EU to increase support for victims of religious persecution and to prioritise freedom of religion or belief in its political dialogue with Nigeria. The resolution will be forwarded to the Council, Commission, the EU's High Representative, and the Nigerian government and parliament. The move affects Nigerian Christians, who face ongoing violence, and EU-Nigeria relations, as the Parliament pushes for a stronger EU stance on religious freedom in diplomatic engagement.
