Belgian politics is focused on an upcoming decision by the federal government regarding targeted energy assistance for workers who commute by car. MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez told VTM Nieuws and Terzake that tens of millions of euros should be allocated to protect purchasing power, funded by a payroll-based subsidy with an employer tax credit. He argued that higher energy prices have increased VAT receipts and that this windfall should be returned to consumers, insisting workers are not responsible for energy price spikes. Bouchez criticized being portrayed as the source of government problems and urged the government to keep its promise to help work pay, noting his opposition to a VAT hike. He defended MR’s budget discipline and contrasted it with other ministers, while highlighting MR’s 25 proposals, including measures for farmers and independents.
