The European Union will debut a joint literary space at the Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty (FLIP) from 23 to 25 July 2026, bringing together writers, translators, publishers and cultural institutions from ten EU member states and Ukraine. The initiative, called Casa Europa, features more than 30 guests and marks the first participation of a Slovenian author in the festival, as well as Ukraine's debut in the official FLIP programme.

The Casa Europa programme includes debates on memory, translation, democracy, war, climate crisis and contemporary challenges. Among the confirmed authors are Andrey Kurkov (Ukraine), Kamel Daoud (France), Eduardo Halfon (Spain), Piia Leino (Finland), Theis Ørntoft (Denmark), Nicoletta Verna (Italy), Michelle Gallen (Ireland), Ayoko Mensah (Belgium), Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida (Portugal), Nathacha Appanah (France) and Boštjan Videmšek (Slovenia). Piia Leino and Theis Ørntoft are winners of the European Union Prize for Literature, established in 2009 to recognise emerging literary talent and promote cross-border circulation and translation of works.

The event is organised by the EU Delegation to Brazil in partnership with EU member states and European cultural institutions. It aims to foster exchange between writers, translators, publishers and readers, bringing European literary diversity to the FLIP audience. A central feature is the Passaporte do Leitor Europeu (European Reader Passport), an interactive experience that guides visitors through different countries, authors and stories within Casa Europa.

a panel titled A Travessia das Línguas (The Crossing of Languages) will discuss the role of translators, and a separate market-oriented panel will explore opportunities for publishing translated European literature in Brazil, bringing together publishers, literary agents and cultural representatives.

Children and families are also catered for, with a workshop called Histórias que Viajam (Stories That Travel) led by Sueli Menezes (Austria/Brazil), a reading dedicated to Pippi Longstocking, created by Astrid Lindgren (Sweden), and a workshop inspired by Hans Christian Andersen (Denmark).

Beyond the literary programme, Casa Europa will host author-translator-publisher meetings, an exhibition, tastings of products with Geographical Indication, musical performances and cultural activities open to the public. A highlight is the Noite Europeia de Vozes (European Night of Voices), dedicated to the continent's linguistic and cultural diversity.

The venue is a historic house in central Paraty, open to the public from 10:00 to 21:00 on all three days of FLIP. The full programme is available at https://www.casaeuropanaflip.com/.
