The European Union has welcomed the framework agreement signed by Lebanon and Israel in Washington, which calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the progressive redeployment of the Israeli Defense Forces from Lebanese territory. In a statement on 2 July 2026, High Representative Josep Borrell, speaking on behalf of the EU, said the agreement offers a much-needed perspective for de-escalation and peace, and for restoring Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity. The EU commended the constructive engagement of both countries and urged all actors to adhere to the agreement and implement their commitments, including through the newly established trilateral Military Coordination Group. The EU called for a permanent end to hostilities and full respect of international law, including international humanitarian law, with emphasis on the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The EU reiterated that any lasting solution must be anchored in the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The EU highlighted its recently approved 100-million-euro assistance package for the Lebanese Armed Forces, supporting the Lebanese government's efforts to assert state authority, national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and its monopoly over arms. The EU expressed readiness to support the implementation of the framework agreement and further enhance support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and internal security forces, including through a possible EU mission. The EU also recalled the importance of a continued UN presence in Lebanon in a post-UNIFIL context and reaffirmed its readiness to contribute in that regard in 2027.
