The European Union Delegation to Jordan is co-organising a performance of Handel's Messiah at the historic site of Mukawir (Machaerus) on 12 September 2026, launching a cultural and spiritual programme leading up to the 2030 global commemorations of St. John the Baptist. The event, held under the theme 'Echoes of Faith, Voices of Heritage', is presented by Friends of Jordan Festivals in cooperation with the EU Delegation, and is supported by the Jordan Tourism Board, Royal Jordanian, Goethe-Institut Jordan, and the Embassy of Hungary in Jordan.
Mukawir holds significance as the site traditionally associated with the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, making it a fitting venue for Messiah, which explores themes of faith, redemption, and hope. The initiative aims to enhance sustainable cultural heritage initiatives and strengthen the ability of civil society actors to collaborate in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, according to EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas. The EU has long supported the preservation and development of historical sites across Jordan, including Mukawir.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Dr. Emad Hijazeen said the event marks the launch of a cultural and spiritual journey towards the 2030 commemorations, reflecting Jordan's commitment to preserving shared heritage and strengthening the country's position as a leading destination for Christian pilgrimage and cultural tourism. The initiative reinforces Jordan's role as a meeting place of civilizations, faiths, and cultures, and seeks to honour the legacy of St. John the Baptist through sacred music while acknowledging Jordan's contribution to peaceful coexistence and intercultural dialogue across the Middle East.
