On July 15, onboard Italian Frigate BERGAMINI, Rear Admiral Milos ARGENTON (IT-N) handed over the duty of ASPIDES’ Force Commander to Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis (EL-N), Commander of Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES. The handover ceremony marks a routine change of command for the EU naval operation, which plays a crucial role in safeguarding shipping and supporting the safe passage of vessels through critical maritime routes. The previous day, the Commander of the Operation awarded the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES (EU) Medal to the crew of HS PSARA, a Greek frigate, in recognition of their service. EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, launched in February 2024, is the EU's naval operation in the Red Sea and the Gulf region, tasked with protecting commercial shipping from attacks. The operation involves several EU member states contributing naval assets. The change of command and medal ceremony, held on July 14-15, 2026, were announced by the EEAS press and information team on July 16. The handover ensures continuity of the operation's mission to ensure freedom of navigation and protect EU interests in the region.
